Strabismus Surgery Treatment
Strabismus surgery is an effective treatment for both children and adults, and it can be performed at a very young age. The main difference between surgery in adults and infants lies in the functional outcomes, which may vary slightly depending on each case.
At Batal Specialized Medical Complex, strabismus surgery for children is performed under general anesthesia. The child will be fully asleep and feel no pain during the procedure, which typically lasts between one and two hours. The surgeon makes a small incision in the tissue covering the eye to access the eye muscles, then carefully repositions the muscles to help both eyes align and work together. Depending on the condition, the surgery may be performed on one eye or both.
After surgery, mild redness may last for about a week and gradually fade. Slight swelling is also normal. Most children return to their normal activities within one to five days. Results may be visible immediately after surgery, or it may take four to six weeks to fully assess the success of the procedure.
After pediatric strabismus surgery, we recommend the following:
Avoid getting water, soap, or shampoo into the eyes.
Avoid rubbing the eyes.
Avoid rough play such as running at high speed, wrestling, or activities that require intense visual focus.
Avoid swimming.
We do not recommend returning to school before two weeks have passed after the surgery.

How Does Strabismus Affect Vision?
Our brain normally combines images from both eyes into a single three-dimensional image. This process allows us to judge distance and depth, known as depth perception. When one eye is misaligned, two different images are sent to the brain instead of one.
In young children, the brain may learn to ignore the image from the misaligned eye and rely only on the stronger eye. As a result, depth perception can be affected. In adults who develop strabismus later in life, double vision is more common because the brain has already learned to process images from both eyes and cannot easily ignore the image from the affected eye.
